Resources developed by parents and their children

As part of the Community of Practice we wanted to hear from parents about what they find helpful from professionals and their experiences. We engaged with 23 parents, 18 through an online survey and five through an online workshop, to ask them about their experiences and what helped them.

We want to thank the parents who completed the survey and also took part in the online workshop for talking about their experiences and what they find helpful. We developed a leaflet from parents' feedback, which includes some direct quotes and some statements, which brings bring similar messages together. Every parents experience is unique and these statements don’t represent everyone, but they do offer some important shared messages from parents.

Turning Points: Birth mothers and journeys to change

This short film, 'Turning Points', was made with mothers who had been part of the recurrent care research carried out by Lancaster University. Six birth mothers involved in the study each tell their own story. They talk about the impact of having a child removed and their subsequent journeys to change. (Length: 9 minutes and 14 seconds).

In Our Hearts

A book co-created with contributions from around 50 women within Mothers Living Apart from Their Children and Making Sense groups within WomenCentre, which offers a range of services to women in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Halifax.

The book uses artwork and stories from women, covering their experiences of initial separation, court proceedings, and relationships with services.  It includes the experiences of mothers who have been able to have children returned to their care or contact increased, mothers who have no current contact at all and those for whom contact will remain limited.

If I could talk to me | Just For Kids Law

This short animated film, 'If I could talk to me', shows a woman trying to advise her younger self what to expect when social workers express concerns that her baby is at risk. It explores the fear that young parents feel and the importance of getting objective and independent support from someone who understands the issues and the law.  It was co-created by a young woman who had been through this experience.
